K-1 Winter Projects!

Here are a few samples of our K-1 Students' winter projects! While working on these projects we learned about collage.

3rd-5th Grade Art Club: Linoleum Cut Prints!!!

Here are a few of our 3rd-5th grade Art Clubbers' finished linoleum cut prints. The students drew up designs, which they then transferred to square soft linoleum pieces. They then carved out the areas they wanted to remain white, after which they inked and printed their own hand-carved design. This process developed from wood cut print prints, which have been used in art for hundreds of years. While materials have changed, the process remains remarkably consistent. One of the beautiful things about this process is that it challenges the students to think about an both the negative and positive space in the image they designed.

A Brief Review of 1-2 Art Club

Below are a few images of some of the projects our 1st-2nd grade Art Club! In order, Van Gogh sunflower paintings, fall banners, handmade and handmade painted clay beads, and watercolor-painted holiday ornaments.

Kinder and First Grade Fall Artwork

Here's a sampling of some of the projects our younger students have been working on. They learned about value (light and shadow) while making their pumpkins (and of course, they could not resist adding a face to their creations), and they learned about blending warm colors while making their fall leaves. Enjoy!

Art Club: Kusudama and Club on Friday!

Hello Archway Art Club families!

Just to confirm, there is art club this Friday, the 30th, for the 1-2nd graders. We are working on a fall themed project, and they are doing a spectacular job. Also, please be aware that, due to the number of Fridays we were unable to have club in the past month, I am trying to schedule a couple "catch-up" clubs for the 1-2nd grade art clubbers. More on that later!

As for our 3-5th grade art clubbers, we just finished working on our Kusudama project. Kusudama are made using the art of origami to make multiple interlocking units that unite to form a spherical form. Here is what the finished product looks like!

Read-A-Thon and Book Fair

Read-a-Thon
Mark your calendars for our second annual Read-a-thon! This special day will be on Friday, October 30th, and will occur alongside our first on-site book fair! Students may come to school dressed as their favorite classical literary characters, scientists, or historical figures. The goal of this event is to stir a continuous love for reading and an opportunity for lifelong learning. Costumes need not come directly from the grade level curriculum, though they must be classically on-mission. We kindly ask that you send costume ideas to your classroom teacher for approval by Friday, October 23rd. Be sure that costumes allow students to engage in regular school day activities like recess, lunch, and some curricular instruction. The headmasters, teachers, fellow scholars, and students' family members will read to students throughout the day. The Read-a-thon will be a huge celebration of reading for our entire school community!

Book Fair

The Archway Arete book fair will run from Monday, October 26th - Friday, October 30th in the resource room. We look forward to providing this exciting opportunity for students and parents to purchase books for their personal and classroom libraries. The class that purchases the most books from the week-long book fair will be awarded a pizza party. Profits from the book fair will go directly to children's books for the Arete library. The book fair will be open for parents at specific times during the school day, so please plan to attend! There are prizes to be won for participating!

1st Quarter Letter Grades and Parent Conferences

Hello 4th-5th Grade Archway Families!

It has come to my attention that due to a technical error, your student's letter grades did not get printed on his or her quarterly report card. First of all, I apologize for any confusion or distress this may have caused. Secondly, please rest assured that each student did receive a letter grade for their 1st quarter. I will send out that letter grade with the second quarter grade, so that you can easily view what grade your student received their first quarter as well. However, if you would like that letter grade sooner, please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to send it as soon as possible. Again, I apologize for any inconvenience this situation may have caused, and if there is anything further you need from me, please do not hesitate to ask.

I look forward to meeting with some of you for conferences this week, and I hope your fall break was splendid.

Cheers!

4th and 5th Grade End-of-the-Quarter Quizzes!

Hello 4th and 5th grade Archway families!

As our first quarter comes to and end, our 4th and 5th grade students are working through new projects and getting ready for their end-of-the-quarter quizzes. Students will have a day of in-class review to study the materials that will be covered in the quiz, after which they will receive a study guide to make sure they are as prepared as possible to take the quiz. 4th grade will take their quiz on Thursday, October 1st, and 5th grade will take their quiz on Tuesday, September 29th. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, and have a lovely week!

Mona Lisa and Self Portraits: 4th Grade

Our 4th graders have completed their self portrait project! During this project, they learned about how the content of portraits, such as the sitter, their clothing, and the background, all help give information about who is in the portrait. We learned how a pyramid compositional structure is used to direct the viewer's eye to the focal point of the portrait, which is most commonly the sitter's face. The students learned how to blend and burnish with colored pencils to color their own self-portraits. Below is one of our reference images, the Mona Lisa, as well as samples of finished work from 4A, 4B and 4C.

The Renaissance and Rembrandt:5th Grade Study Drawing Project

Here are a few samples of 5th grade's finished study drawing project. Our 5th grade students learned how Renaissance artists practice different parts of their art works over and over again to increase their skill and solve difficult visual problems such as light logic and complex shapes. To practice making a study drawing of their own, they made a reproduction of Rembrandt's Elephant Study. They used the element of line to describe the shape of the elephant and used the cross-hatching method, which uses layers of intersecting lines, to create different values. Below is an image of Rembrandt's study and samples of 5A, 5B, and 5C's reproductions.

Hello 4th-5th Grade Arete Families!

This is just a quick update to let you know that samples of student work will be posted soon. Both 4th and 5th grade are coming to the end of their projects, and doing a wonderful job. I am so excited to share what they have been working on! Expect to see samples of the finished pieces posted early next week.

1st Grade Parent Volunteers: Thank you!

A special thank you to the three wonderful parents who came in and helped make the first grade display look so wonderful (as well as helping me organize some things too!).

Parent help and participation is a vital part of keeping the school, its students, and its teachers working at their very best, and it is deeply appreciated.

As I need assistance in the future, I will post more opportunities for all grade levels. Thank you once again to those who helped. You are invaluable and you made my day!

With great sincerity,

Ms. Arce-Lindsay

Here are some thank-you flowers, courtesy of Van Gogh!

3rd-5th Grade Art Club: Book Binding!

Here is a sample of the project our Art Clubbers just completed. Excellent work artists! On to the next project!!!

Kindergarten Line and Color Practice

Just a glimpse of some of the projects Kindergarten has been working on. They practiced using primary and secondary colors on a Picasso line drawing of Francoise Gilot and used pastels to create a flower still life.
